How to Fix a Squeaky Door

Small DIY projects that you can do before listing your house on the market.

The source of the squeaking is most likely a dirty hinge that’s causing friction between the hinge and the hinge pin.

How can we fix this problem?

1. Gather your tools: a hammer, philip screwdriver, rag, lubricant.

2. Remove the round hinge pin. Place the screwdriver under the lip of the top pin and tap it upwards lightly.

3. Clean the pin. Wrap it in the rag and rub the dirt off.

4. Re-lubricate. Spray lubricant on the rag and generously coat the pin. Don’t use cooking oils.

5. Replace. After cleaning and re-lubricating, place the pin back in the hinge, tap with the hammer, and leave a gap large enough for your screwdriver to fit into in case you have to repeat the process. Wipe excess lubricant off the hinge with the rag.

6. Test. Open and close the door a few times. If it still squeaks, repeat this process.
