Congratulations you closed escrow and you’re ready to move in.
Not so fast, you should do this first once you get the seller’s house key.
Change the locks!!!
You don’t know if you got all the keys that were made for every door in the house.
Perhaps the seller had extra keys. Maybe a neighbor had a key to the house so they could take care of the house when they were out on vacation or for emergencies. Perhaps the grandparents, babysitter, pet sitter or housekeeper had a key and didn’t return it in time.
When the seller bought the house, he may not have received all the keys from the previous owner and probably made the mistake of not changing the locks.
Brand new homes should not be exempt from this either. Builders use master keys.
Don’t risk it and call a local locksmith as soon as possible.
